Lincoln 10k Road Race

Over 4,000 runners took to the streets of Lincoln on Sunday 6th April for the 10k Road Race, many of whom donned extravagant costumes to raise money for charity. Among the highlights were Batman and Robin, a wheelchair-cum-tank and a bear in full army gear. There was also one chap, Chris Hall, who ran the entire race barefooted to raise money for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

My attire of all-black running top and shorts was a little less conspicuous, but that did not bother the hundreds of spectators who lined the streets to offer their support. The atmosphere along the entire route was fantastic, as were the band who serenaded runners half way through the race – although I did not stop to listen for too long as I had my own personal battle to worry about. My housemate, Nicky, was also competing and my beloved 40″ television was on the line.

The course itself was mercifully flat until the ninth kilometre, at which point a steady incline comes as a rather unpleasant surprise to those unfamiliar with the route (me). Survive that ordeal though and the race ends with a dash past the cathedral, before a final push into the castle grounds. I have run a fair number of races over the years and the finish line of the Lincoln 10k is as picturesque as any. Similarly, the medal awarded is up there with the very best, capturing some of Lincoln’s most iconic symbols.

The race was superbly organised and the good people of Lincoln were out in their droves to support runners all the way.
