Lincolnshire to host National Cycling Championships

Lincolnshire will host the 2015 British Cycling National Road Race Championships, it has been announced. The event will coincide with the 60th edition of the Lincoln Grand Prix, which will be expanded to meet the requirements of the Championships.

Riders will cover 60 miles in the West Lindsey region, before completing eight laps of the Grand Prix circuit, bringing the total distance to 125 miles. The finish line will be situated at Castle Square.

Ian Emmerson, the Lincoln Grand Prix event organiser, believes the Championships could be a shot in the arm for the local economy.

“Publicity will be huge for the event,” he said. “I’m sure that there will be a huge attraction to Lincoln, and the economic benefit to the area will be absolutely huge.”

“We did a survey on the Grand Prix in the last two years, which showed almost half a million pound in benefit just from the existing event. I think you can multiply that by maybe three or four times.”

The event will attract some of the sports’ top stars to the county, with 2013 Road Race Champions Mark Cavendish and Lizzie Armitstead likely to line up alongside the likes of Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome, Tour de France champions in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
