Sainsbury’s School Games

Flipside found itself at the Lincolnshire’s Sainsbury’s Winter School Games recently, where hundreds of school children were given their first taste in competitive sport. Around 80 primary schools signed up for the event, where 650 children all took part in activities throughout the day. Some of the main sports on show included: swimming, basketball, netball, hockey and new age kurling. Teams ranged from 8 to 18 year-olds all hoping to walk away with a medal.

Lincolnshire Sport CEO, Janet Inman, said: “This is a legacy programme from the 2012 games, so young people here have a reflection of what they would feel like if they were taking part in the Olympics.”

“We need to have days like this to showcase sports in a positive light. It’s all about that first taste of competitive sport which leads kids to find clubs near them to get involved.”

Four-time Paralympian Ellie Simmonds is a success story who started her journey attending a similar school games, going to show how influential and important these sporting events can be on the kids who take part. London 2012 gold medalist Tim Baillie also attended the day’s event to detail his Olympic experiences and spread inspiration to kids – whilst also signing countless autographs.

He said: “I think everyone is trying to get the most benefit out of the Olympics, and really push sport participation for the kids and everyone. It’s nice to see so many sports here taking part together, all at the same time. ”

All those who took part in the games looked to have had an exciting day of sport. For once, it wasn’t about taking part, the winning mattered too. But more importantly it gave kids more chance to be inspired to get involved in a fit and active lifestyle.
